Since then, whenever I hear that Shelley is presenting somewhere, I am excited to hear her. Not only does she have a wealth of knowledge to share, but she is a natural storyteller. When she released her book, we all had to read it! I just finished « One without the other : Stories of Unity Through Diversity and Inclusion ». ( https://www.amazon.ca/One-Without-Other-Diversity-Inclusion/dp/1553796586) For those who have heard Shelley speak, you can pretty much hear her telling the stories throughout the book. She has a way of explaining diversity and inclusion in a way that makes it clear and easy to understand. And she’s not afraid to use her own experiences, both positive and negative, to give us meaningful examples.
As we continue through this transformation in British Columbia, I think there are many teachers who are questioning their practices. I know that I have had many moments over the past 2 years where I have had an uneasy feeling. I have reflected on my time in the classroom and asked myself many questions. I should have done such and such for « insert student name here ». How could I have made sure he /she succeeded? What if I would have known this sooner? As teachers (which i often feel is synonymous with perfectionists), it is easy to forget that we are only human. Maya Angelou said it best:
